Open Source Business Models

Dare is exploring open source business models. I fully appreciate the complexity of the problem that he is trying to grapple with. While I agree with much of what he said in this and his previous diary entry (in particular, if one focuses too much on one's competitors, the inevitable result is that one's eye is taken off the ball), I don't think that he is asking the right questions yet.

Question: from a fiduciary responsibility to one's shareholders and independent of the availablity of source, what is the proper price point for the .NET Framework?

This is a loaded question, and perhaps one that none of us should speculate on. However, one thing you will find is that it is impossible to answer that question without an understanding of the business goals of your organization.
