Apache Perspective

Tim Bray: At the opposite extreme, the actual sessions were remarkably quiet, civilized, and low-key. Verging, in fact, on boring. There are debates raging: WS-* vs. REST, EE vs. .NET vs. LAMP, Linux vs. Solaris vs. Windows. But you don’t hear about any of this stuff coming off the stage at ApacheCon.

I was unable to attend ApacheCon this year, but I have kept up via reading feeds and talking to people who did attend.

Tim’s point reminds me of Doc's reaction to ApacheCon the previous year.  He found that he could go up to a person and ask them if they had heard of some recent announcement by Microsoft which was reportedly going to change everything.  Typical response: no.  And to be honest, I no longer even remember what announcement Doc was asking about.

People at the ASF seem to have a simple view of the world.  There are projects that they want to work on.  And projects that they don’t.

There are WS-* and REST projects at the ASF.  And J2EE, .Net, and LAMP projects at the ASF.  And people working on Linux, Solaris, and Windows.

Trust me, there are occasionally flare ups, you just have to know where to look.  ;-)

But mostly there are people who are heads down coding.
