It’s just data

Seeing a sub-$300 Linux-based ASUS EEE PC 900A on the shelves at a retail store… I couldn’t resist making an impulse purchase.

Even with the “Easy Mode” UI in place, all it takes is a Ctrl+Alt+T and I have a bash shell, ready to ssh into my other machines.

The keyboard is small but functional.  I can touch type, albeit with higher than normal error rates at this point.  The trackpad is a bit sensitive.  Meanwhile, I’m using the keyboard more for navigation.

Not much in the way of free space, but if I want to store something big, I can use the SD slot.

This post was entered on my new Eee.

I’m waiting for the Linux port of Chrom(ium), and then I’m totally there.

Cool. I’ve gotten to play with one only a little (there’s one on my LAN). It seems like there’s a lot hidden in there in easymode. For example Konsole is on there but I don’t think  it’s the one that launches with Ctrl-Alt-T. And we had to change the keyboard input mode to get the right quote characters to come out (which was resulting in some odd-looking errors from the Python sample we tried). It was set up for English/International instead of English/US.

(btw the big red box that came up when I started my comment is pretty frightening)

Welcome to theee club!

I actually started typing this comment to see the “big red box":
Yep, it’s pretty frightening / off-putting alright.

You could try changing the colour (orange? - if you still want the highly visible / warning feel to it) & soften the language a bit: "Be aware”, “Be advised” - it’s a bit to authoritarian for my likes.

The 1st sentence is great, then I get a sinking feeling from there on.
Why not add a “more” or “technical details” link that reveals the next two sentences only if clicked?
In that way inexperienced users can get the idea in one friendly sentence, and advanced users can get the low-down if they like.

Anyway I like the UI concept behind the message. Might be confronting because I haven’t seen it before. BTW a slow fade-in might help too.

I’m curious to know how much blog-spam is entered manually - I though most of it would be scripted.

Cheers 8^)

I don’t know why they still bother really, considering 99% of user generated content now uses nofollow...
