Ed Fisher: It seems the certificate that Microsoft uses to secure access to your buddy list was updated with a new wildcard certificate

Instructions adapted for Ubuntu/Firefox:

You don’t even need to restart pidgin.

Those who are terminally afeared of all things non-GUI can do the last step by using Tools->Certficates in Pidgin and clicking the Add button.

It seems like the problem is Pidgin not grabbing the intermediate certificates. More info: [link]

A note: On windows vista and 7 the .purple folder resides in C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming and for XP C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data. For linux, it is in the home directory I guess.
