Is simple name clash enough to disqualify a name?
-
No, they have to be in the same field such that confusion could possibly occur (which is very fuzzy).

Lokahi
-
[KenMacLeod] about as clear to pronounce as "Linux", which seems pretty popular these days...
-
[AdamRice] Come on, are either of these really hard to pronounce?
-
[JeremyGray] I guess it would depend on an individual's familiarity with the words, their languages of origin, and/or pronunciation rules for words from those languages or from the Pacific Rim region in general. Taking off my I-live-in-a-North-American-city-with-a-huge-Asian-immigrant-population hat for a moment, I could concoct a slew of ways to pronounce both Kagami and Lokahi, most often varying on vowel pronunciation, secondarily on syllable emphasis. Heck, even with the hat on I can come up with a few variations.
-
[TomasJogin] What Jeremy said, and no they're not "hard" to pronounce, it's that the pronounciation is "not clear".
-
[JeremyGray] Though not exactly related to pronunciation, and perhaps this indicates a need for an "Eliminated because of unclear meaning" section, what is also "not clear", except to those who know the languages of origin, are the meanings of each word. The meaning would have to be explained to everyone else. In a perfect word, the standard's name would have an "immediacy" to anyone that read it, in that the name would, without requiring explanation, give them an immediate impression of our intended meaning of the word, and that even if they guessed differently their guess would still be roughly indicative of our intent or of a reasonable interpretation thereof. Pie did this, as did Echo, Spark, and words like them. Atom did too, but some have been worried about some of the negative guesses that Atom invites.
-
[BruceLoebrich] This section is arbirtrary. I ran the nine "cleared" candidates past three of my co-workers. Even with numbers this small, Axon, Dada, Sygnal, Wyre and SIKUS were not procounced the same by all three people the first time. Implying these words, or words like Echo, Spark and Atom somehow convey our intent better is also arbitrary. Such decisions should be left to the voting process.
-
[TomasJogin] New name proposal: "Wahyeoeioiya" -- just as clear to pronunce as the other names, because that's totally arbitrary, right? There's a place for discussions of project name guidelines: ProjectNameGuidelines
-
[BruceLoebrich] Isn't this the page where names are being vetted? I'm not discussing name guidelines, just the inappropriate use of such guidelines to arbitrarily eliminate leading candidates. Lokahi is hardly my favorite candidate, but it was number three when approval voting was (oddly) dropped and compared to the cleared candidates, it is just as meaningful and no more difficult to pronounce.
-
[TomasJogin] It seems like you want to change the guidelines, since "clear pronunciation" is completely arbitrary. If that's the case, discuss that in ProjectNameGuidelines.
