Democratizing Innovation

Ross Mayfield: Some norms such as the right to fork, open participation and self-organizing contribution strengthen this opportunity and provide models for consideration beyond software development. When a project can be forked, it provides a balance against poor management (albeit at a cost) and fosters a leadership style that lets other express ideas and have them be heard.

Another new book covering related topics is Democratizing Innovation, which courageously has been released under a CC License and can be freely downloaded off of the web.  This book approaches the subject from an academic perspective.

It was recommended to me by James Snell who — while he hasn’t been as actively lately on the public web — has been very much involved in blog advocacy within IBM.  This important work will take a while to produce dividends in the form of more open participation by more people in areas beyond software development.
