Taxpayer Advocate Update
On Friday afternoon, while I was watching Star Trek, the assigned Taxpayer Advocate attempted to call me and left a message. I returned her call this morning.
In short order, she spotted the error. The person who processed my 2006 1040X in November mistakenly attempted to apply the changes to my 2007 return. This request was quite understandably rejected, the matter was then inexplicably closed, and none of my subsequent phone calls made any bit of difference.
Now what the advocate asked of me is both maddening and indicates that I am finally dealing with someone who understands how best to deal with bureaucracy. She wants me to once again fill out a complete and corrected return, as well as a 1040X, and either fax or mail both as well as all of the supporting forms and documentation (including the W2’s and W2C’s) and the relevant correspondence that I have received to date to her. If I do so by June 5th, she will respond back to me by June 16th, and resolve the matter by August 31th.
This is maddening because it shifts all the work back on me, and means that I essentially have to start over.
It is promising because the way to deal with a system which operates based on requests is to make another request. I actually had suggested this course of action in prior calls, but was told not to do that as it “would confuse things further”. In this case, we will be dealing with a request that has been reviewed and certified by an official Taxpayer Advocate.
Meanwhile, all collection actions have been suspended until this is resolved.
