IRS Success, Kinda

Yesterday, I got a check for everything I was owed, plus interest.  It was a long, sad saga.

The Taxpayer Advocate ended up being worse than useless.  She did not forward on my completely reworked return.  She did not stop collection actions.  I answered all of her questions only to be asked the same questions over again.  She closed my account without consulting with me.  I employed the help of a CPA, and he contacted her, and he described her response as being “rather curt”.

Ultimately, we did what I wanted to do all along: produce an amended return, send it along bypassing the Taxpayer Advocate — and everybody else — and start over.  That was filed on September 17th, 2010.  115 days later, I got a letter telling me that I would get a full refund in 2-3 weeks.  There was no mention of refund of penalties and interest.  22 days later, I got a letter telling me that I would get a full refund in 4-8 weeks, again with no mention of penalties or interest.

Yesterday I got a check.  It included interest on the amount they owed me.  There was no cover letter and no explanation.  The interest amount completely offset the interest that they originally charged me, and covered the penalty, with a modest amount left over.

In a just world, I would have gotten actual interest back on the full amount of my money that they had tied up and not just a mere refund.
