Name It Proposals Discussion

[GrantCarpenter] The fact that another open source project is using the name Echo, would like to keep it as their own and has a pending trademark application on the name seem like compelling reasons to not use it. I refactored the existing alternate name proposals on this page and others and tried to come up with something less chaotic as a process: ProjectNameProcess, ProjectNameProposals. Related: ProjectNameGuidelines, ProjectLegal.

(Perhaps this page should be slowly factored out in favor of ProjectNameProposals?).

This space is for discussion possible naming proposals. Serious proposals only please.

A poll of Pie, Echo or Other has been started. See NameIt.

[Skware] I've got a few ideas so I'll group them. I think the name would sound best if it it could be used like a noun ("do you have Commune support", "chuck it on your Commune site"), as well as sound cool when used as a verb ("Commune it", "I'm Communing this"). Google is a good example of where this went well (how often do you use the saying "google it" rather than search for it on the internet these days. I also believe it should be short and easily pronounceable. Perhaps a mangling of one of these suggestions so it sounds similar, but is not a real english word (e.g Kleenex is a good example of doing this)

I personally like Commune best out of all of these, perhaps Commune API or something similar, though Harbinger and Ballyhoo are less frequently used terms so might be more appropriate.

[[MikeDavies]] In the spirit of the above: Whisper (as in Web Syndication/Publishing), Squawk, and Pizzazz (as in I just added Pizzazz to my blog!).

EchoSyn Because of the potential name conflict, this will solve it. It is still short, easy to rember. Google does not give much results on it and the domain names seems to be available. -- FrançoisGranger

[JeremyGray] Acronyms, acronyms, acronyms. So many techies, so few marketers. :) echo was definitely a nice marketing-friendly name. It's too bad that it is taken, but it can and should continue to be considered as a good example of simplicity, clarity, and catchiness. Those of you with good marketing contacts should run the concept by them and see what they come up with. I'm a techie, too, but the marketing part of my brain wants to toss out the following for consideration:
